You don’t need to get on a plane to discover more meaning in your life. Take five actions to make 2021 the best year ever: reflect, reimagine, research, and react to be reenergized. #makeyourcontributioncount #youmewemovement Click To Tweet
Let’s start with when and where to start. That is simple – NOW. No ticket required. You do, however, need to slice out a bit of time to reflect.
Five Actions to make 2021 the best year ever
1. Reflect
Grab a pen and paper. Yes, we are going old school. Writing is such a therapeutic way to stay in the moment and not be distracted by grammar and spelling corrections. On paper is where your wings can spread—[Seriously, typing has been really distracting]. Contemplate who your authentic self is? Are you direct, playful, high-energy, a listener, a challenger? What do you love, enjoy, and what talents do you have? How can you embrace those characteristics to live your best life?

2. Reimagine
Now, this is the fun part. You know when you buy a lottery ticket, the best part is thinking about “What if” … what if I won, what could I do then that I can’t do now? [Yes, I start weWednesdays with “what if” … to focus on possibilities.] What if you know your authentic self, talents, what you love and enjoy? What could you do then? After some deep reflection, you just won the lottery. Because my guess is the longer you were in thought, you realize that you could do something to serve others? If I’m wrong, go back to reflection.
3. Research
There are many opportunities to contribute. Start with googling issues related to what you care about: e.g., anti-violence, historical preservation, disabilities, elderly, homeless youth, children’s education, abused animals, higher education for women [I’ll save you the trouble, visit youmwefoundation.org where we provide scholarships for women in developing countries]. Research takes time, but don’t get so bogged down that you have paralysis. Information can stagnate your progress, and you want to contribute now.
4. React
If you don’t know what or who you care about, a great place to research is to join a service club: Lions Club, Rotary, or Soroptimist (or the YouMeWe Community https://youmewe.ca/women-social-impact-community/). They will expose you to diverse experiences. Or visit Volunteer Canada (https://volunteer.ca/index.php?MenuItemID=355) as they have lists of volunteer opportunities, even in the pandemic. By contributing, you will identify what energizes you and what depletes you—providing you with the insight to explore further a path that you connect with long-term.

5. Reenergize
Neurosciences tell us what we focus on grows. Therefore, when you contribute to others, you will feel more of a sense of meaning.
In times of uncertainty, we can get caught in a spiral where we become self-absorbed. Although that is ok, for a short time, one of the most selfish things we can do to turn the tide on self-pity is contributing to another. Your energy will instantly be transformed.

Take the most profound journey that you will experience. It takes some time, but what better time to make your contribution count than now. The best part is that many contribution initiatives can complement your work, or you can do for work, connect to new friends, provide a learning opportunity, or give you the motivation you need to communicate with others.
