Men dominate Google image searches for most jobs — even for bartender, probation officer and medical scientist, roles in which women outnumber men.
In 57 percent of occupations, image searches indicate the jobs are more male-dominated than they actually are.
There’s evidence this skewed picture discourages women from aspiring to dozens of careers and increases discrimination and harassment of women who are already in those jobs.
Researchers from the nonpartisan Pew Research Center used a carefully calibrated and monitored artificial-intelligence algorithm to calculate gender representation in the top Google image search results for more than 100 occupations. To compare online representation to a job’s real-world gender breakdown, they compared results to Labor Department statistics.
