Interview with Sydney Graham, Founder, Sydney Graham Consulting; Canada
Sydney — Engagement Specialist, Educator & Advocate With more than 30 years of experience, Sydney has dedicated her career to transforming how healthcare systems engage with patients and families—moving them from passive recipients of care to active partners and co-designers of better outcomes. An Engagement Specialist and Educator, Sydney’s expertise spans Patient- and Family-Centred Care, leadership development, and evidence-based partnership models that improve quality, safety, and system performance. Her work reaches across local, national, and global contexts, collaborating with hospitals, government agencies, community care organizations, academia, researchers, nonprofits—and most importantly, patients and families themselves. What sets Sydney apart is that her professional expertise is deeply informed by extensive lived experience. That insight has led her work to evolve toward Mental Illness and Addiction (MHA) care, where patients and families often face systemic barriers, fragmented policies, stigma, and a lack of meaningful collaboration within healthcare. To address these gaps, Sydney joined Families for Addiction Recovery, where she strengthened engagement and communication strategies and, following additional education, stepped into the role of Peer Support Manager. For the past eight years, she has supported and trained families in evidence-based skills that empower them to partner effectively with loved ones—helping move individuals and families toward meaningful, sustainable change. Alongside her advocacy work, Sydney actively challenges drug policy and health laws, stigma, and the lack of timely, accessible, evidence-based care in addiction and mental health systems. She is a Certified Counsellor and a Cognitive and Dialectical Behaviour Skills Trainer, bringing both clinical tools and compassion into her practice. Sydney also contributes her expertise at the systems level as: -a Board Member of the Ontario Family Caregiver Advisory Network -a member of the Global Patient and Family Advisory Board -a Patient Partner with OntarioMD Her work consistently bridges policy, practice, and lived experience—ensuring that care is not only clinically sound, but humane, collaborative, and accessible.United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal(s) addressed:

Social impact:
Social Impact — Changing Care by Empowering Families
Sydney’s work in mental health and addiction care creates impact that ripples far beyond individual patients—shaping families, communities, and healthcare systems.
By educating and advocating for patients and families, her work:
Reduces stigma by humanizing mental health and addiction experiences, encouraging open dialogue, and disrupting shame and silence
Empowers individuals and families to participate meaningfully in care decisions, strengthening confidence, self-efficacy, and engagement in treatment and recovery
Builds community and connection, helping families feel less isolated by normalizing support, shared learning, and family involvement in recovery
Advances system change by influencing policy, professional practice, and cross-sector collaboration toward evidence-based, timely, and compassionate care
At its core, Sydney’s impact lies in one essential truth:
when families are informed, supported, and included, outcomes improve—for individuals, systems, and society as a whole.
